Acupuncture

Acupuncture is but one technique in the broader context of what is known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupuncture is the insertion of needles into specific energy lines or meridians that exist throughout the body like a network of roads and highways. These highways carry qi, or vital energy. Any type of ill health is fundamentally an imbalance of qi. It could be a blockage of qi, excessive qi, a deficiency of qi, or for most cases a combination of all three. Each individual may be affected differently.

Modern scientific research suggests acupuncture works by stimulating the brain through the peripheral nervous system. Studies have shown different acupuncture points can stimulate entire networks in the brain. Putting a needle into the skin on non-acupuncture points does not have the same effect, and science has been unable to determine a reason for this phenomenon.

One of the most important underlying principles of TCM is that mental, physical, and emotional aspects of being a living person are very much connected. It is the hallmark of acupuncture and TCM to address the patient as a whole and not focus on just one particular symptom. For example, someone with low appetite, hard stools, insomnia, heart palpitations, and migraines would likely have separate diagnoses in Western medicine. However, in TCM these seemingly unrelated symptoms are all manifestations of the same underlying imbalance of the qi flow. Acupuncture can effectively treat multiple symptoms with each session.

Acupuncture works to help restore natural health. It is not a magic bullet or quick fix. Think of how many conditions take years to develop. It also takes time to reverse the imbalances that created those conditions. Most people will start to notice results within 2 to 4 treatments. Generally speaking, the longer you have had specific symptoms, the longer it will take to reduce or eliminate those symptoms. Acupuncture can also help prevent degenerative conditions from worsening.

Specific health conditions that may be effectively treated with acupuncture include asthma, back pain, bladder issues, circulatory issues, constipation, drug addictions, ear/hearing problems, fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal distress, heart problems, jaw pain, kidney health, liver function, nerve pain, paralysis, prostate conditions, reproductive health issues, sinus problems, skin complaints, stroke recovery, throat problems, and women's health issues.

Healing Arts is proud to have Stephen Sedita as our full-time acupuncturist. Stephen has a strong background in western sciences with a Cognitive Science degree from the University of Rochester and 5 years in a Ph. D. program for Complex Systems and Brain Science at Florida Atlantic University. He received his master's degree from the Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine, and he specializes in neuro-acupuncture for strokes, Parkinson's disease, dementia, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, and depression. Stephen strongly believes in looking at the patient holistically to develop the most effective plan of care. He seeks to reduce or eliminate symptoms when possible and restore optimal health. Stephen also has specialized training in Tui Na, a medical massage developed in China, and incorporates that into his acupuncture sessions as well.

Healing Arts Center is also proud to have Smita Shah, L.Ac, practicing at our clinic. Smita has a variety of specialty techniques she incorporates in her sessions, including many bioenergetic therapies such as laser therapy and micropulse to help stabilize and normalize body functioning. Smita also specializes in Biofeedback, a computer-assisted therapy which helps identify root causes of health concerns. Based on this invaluable information, she can then plan care to resolve imbalances and restore optimal health.

One of the most popular bioenergetic therapies offered is PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field). PEMF is a direct approach to charging up individual cells, speeding recovery rates, boosting the immune system, eliminating pain, enhancing sleep quality, easing depression, increasing bone density, and increasing circulation to all parts of the body. You simply lay on a comfortable mat which pulses at low frequencies and penetrates deep into all body tissues. The frequencies are the same encountered in nature and are safe and highly effective.
