Northwest Indiana’s Premier Center for Alternative and Complementary Health Services
Chiropractic care (literally meaning “practice by hand”) has been around for over 100 years, and throughout that time the practice has continued to grow and improve
The foundation of chiropractic is the philosophy that the body has innate healing power that can be stimulated by correcting misalignments in the joints and tissues, where the nerves travel throughout the body. The corrections, called adjustments, reduce stress on the system, restore proper nerve communication and allow the body to improve its healing processes. Not bad for a practice that is drug-free, non-invasive, and very safe. Everyone from newborns to the elderly can safely receive and benefit from chiropractic care.
Dr. Tracey Curtis, DC, is our chiropractor at Healing Arts. Dr. Tracey says, “Many people are a little apprehensive about getting chiropractic care. They have had a painful experience previously or heard that chiropractors only “crack” backs and necks. There are actually many different chiropractic techniques and many ways to approach care. In my practice, the individual is a valuable participant in the process. I believe the body will always attempt to correct a problem, to restore balance. Adjustments can be very gentle and still make big changes. I assess the whole body, including breathing, posture, and structural changes due to injuries or activities. I request imaging when appropriate, but not always. I use gentle, hands-on corrections. Treatments are comprehensive, individualized, gentle, and specific.”
The techniques that Dr. Tracey offers include SacroOccipital Technique (SOT), Diversified, Thompson, Receptor Tonus (NIMMO), Activator, Gonstead, Logan Basic, and KST.
As we age it is important to keep fit and maintain balance and strength. Chiropractic care is an integral part of that maintenance along with exercise, eating right, and getting enough rest. Through regular maintenance, problems are found and corrected before symptoms even appear.
Low Level Laser & LED Therapy
Dr. Tracey also offers Low-Level Laser and LED Therapy at Healing Arts Center.
This therapy is totally painless and can be used to effectively treat tendonitis, sprains and strain, neck and back pain, osteoarthritis, and post-operative pain. It improves tissue repair including muscle, wounds, tendon, bone, and nerves. It reduces nagging pain and inflammation wherever the beam is applied. Treatments take only a few minutes and can by applied two or more times per week.
Low Level Laser Therapy is also FDA approved for the relief of joint pain associated with arthritis as well as the increase of local circulation where the light is applied and the relaxation of muscles.
Significant reduction of inflammation equal to or better over the counter pain medications such as NSAIDS should be experienced within 2 hours. The pain-relieving effects can last for about 48 hours or longer, and the healing time of chronic tendinopathies can be reduced up to 70 percent.
In general, acute conditions may only require one to three treatments. Longer-standing conditions may require as many as twelve treatments. For chronic conditions such as arthritis, a maintenance program may be recommended.
How does it work? When cells are stressed, nitric oxide prevents oxygen consumption by our cell’s mitochondria, which are the energy powerhouses in our cells. This reduces production of ATP and causes oxidative stress leading to increased inflammation and pain. Low Level Laser Therapy displaces nitric oxide from our cells, thereby reducing inflammation and restoring ATP production, helping tissues heal more quickly. In short, Laser therapy stimulates NORMAL cellular function for fast relief.
Over-the-counter pain medications can actually SLOW the healing process and can also have many unwanted side effects. Laser therapy IMPROVES healing as well as reduces pain and inflammation.
In addition, there are no age or weight restrictions. This therapy can also be used over metal implants, plastics, stitches, and on patients with a pacemaker.
